Cycleway extension
Where are we up to?
We have been successful in a recent funding application to the Provincial Growth Fund (PGF) to seal the length of the Te Aroha to Matamata Cycleway. The funding for this project is from a PGF allocation earmarked for specific pre-existing local roading projects to provide urgent economic relief for the workforce sector.
The fine chip seal has enhanced the current trail, making the overall surface much smoother and enjoyable to ride.
Bridges:
The cycleway bridge tender was awarded to Walkway Solutions who have installed bridges along the trail and bridge approaches have being constructed.
Landscaping:
Landscaping works are progressing along the trail, particularly in Te Aroha West and some areas of the trail still requires safety signage and rails.
Toilet units have been installed at the three rest area sites on Manawaru Road, Tower Road and Manawaru.
We have had to remove toilet paper and hand sanitiser from our cycleway rest stops due to ongoing vandalism and theft. We recommend riders carry their own supply.
Interpretive signage telling the stories of the area are in the finishing stages of development.

The trail:
The Te Aroha to Matamata leg of the Hauraki Rail Trail is officially complete.
To allow for duel use, some footpaths were being widened to 1.5metres in urban areas along the track route. This included Whittaker Street, south of the Domain and in Matamata from the 50km sign on Tower Road up to the Broadway/SH29 roundabout and around to Matamata Primary School, as well as the Tower Road walkway.
These alterations make the track extension consistent with all tracks along the length of the Hauraki Rail Trail.
While the majority of the track is compacted gravel, a 1.4km stretch of the trail along Te Aroha-Gordon Road to Mace Road is concrete. This is a requirement from the MBIE (Ministry of Business, Employment and Innovation) and NZTA (New Zealand Transport Agency) along any section of the trail that is less than one metre from the road.
Cycle-trail guru Jonathan Kennett has visited and has provided feedback on whether we are meeting Grade-1 status on the development. We are making some minor alterations based on his recommendations.
