Classes

Jump n Jig - Preschool Dance
Time TBC | Wednesdays | $45 for the term*

Jump n Jig gives 3 – 5 year olds an excellent introduction to dance in a caring and fun filled environment. The class allows the dancers to develop rhythm, coordination, social interactions, and confidence through fun and catchy music and props. This class also provides the foundations to go on to learn highland dancing.

Highland Dancing
Time TBC | Wednesdays | $70 for the term*

Highland dancing is considered a sport and an art form; it builds strong and flexible bodies, improves agility, coordination and balance. Yes, Highland dancing originates from Scotland, however you don't need to be Scottish or have Scottish ancestry to do highland dancing! No prior dance experience is required to begin learning. Children can start learning at any age; 5 or 12 years old, it’s okay!

The syllabus from the New Zealand Academy of Highland and National Dancing is taught so there are 10 different dances that the dancer learns over time. Dancers start by learning the Highland Fling then onto the Irish Jig, Sword Dance, and Sailor Hornpipe.

As a dance school, we encourage and support the dancers to work towards participating in competitions, which could be after a couple of terms or a year later after starting. Competitions are held locally and around the country. They’re typically held on a Saturday and are all year round. Competitions are fun and develop skills such as building confidence by performing in front of a small crowd, learning to work towards a goal, and learning to win and loose gracefully.

We also participate in dance exams, however this is dependent on the age of the child and how long they have been dancing. Exams are optional
