The Volunteer Youth Awards are returning on August 30, 2018. This is the flagship event for the Volunteer Youth Ambassadors.

The VYA are a group of dedicated year 12-13 Matamata, Te Aroha and Morrinsville college students who speak for the Matamata-Piako Districts youth. The 2018 chair is Patrick Roskam, who was nominated for three youth awards in 2017, and claimed two.

Mike King, New Zealand comedian and teen youth suicide prevention advocate will be the guest speaker. This is the second time Mike King has spoken at an event in the district. The 2017 VYA, chaired by Kaleb Reid, invited him to speak at Matamata college, as part of his 'It's cool to Korero" road show - encouraging teens to talk about their problems.
