Rural fire permit season extended
A restricted fire season that came into effect over the Matamata-Piako District from 20 December, has been extended until 5 March. This means a permit is required to have a fire in the open air.
Please be aware that it can take up to 3 working days for a permit to be issued, due to staff workloads at this time of year.
Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ) now have the responsibility for managing rural fire. However, Council staff will still be issuing Fire Permits on behalf of FENZ for the next few years. The maximum penalties for lighting a fire during a restricted or prohibited fire season without a permit have increased from $6,000 to $300,000.
