World Challenge Day Huge Success

World Challenge Day World Challenge Day Last Wednesday saw 18,091 people of all ages and abilities take part in at least 15 minutes of exercise as part of World Challenge Day. The 18,091 people equated to 59.34% of the district’s population – which was narrowly beaten by Kitikami city(Japan) who managed to get 66.8% of their community to take part.

Despite not taking the top spot, Mayor Jan Barnes was elated with the responsefrom the community. “Even though we were just short of Kitikami’s result, I think this event was a great success,” said Mayor Jan. “I love how our community came together for a common goal and had loads of fun while they were at it!” 

“We’re also hoping to further our relationship with Kitikami, continuing to build international relations that will help draw people to visit our wonderful district.”

A number of wonderful local businesses also sponsored prizes – a few of the winners from the area were:

  • Sportsworld Prize for School Spirit – Matamata College
  • Redoubt Bar & Eatery prize for the most interesting place to exercise – NewWorld Matamata (for getting their groove on in the produce department)
  • New World Matamata prize for most innovative participation – Soul Church (fororganising a rubbish collection event)
  • Hobbiton Movie Set prize for Community Spirit – Heath Tapper (fromCandy Gillespie)
  • Images Day Spa prize for Best Dressed Team – Allen Needham & Co
  • Images Day Spa prize for Best Dressed Team – Allen Needham & Co
  • Noel Leeming prize for the best Primary School – St Joseph’s Te Aroha
  • PaperPlus/Toyworld prize for Community Spirit – Te Aroha Kindergarten
  • Te Aroha Mineral Spas prize for Community Spirit – BNZ Te Aroha
