Health and Safety for kerbside collections

From Monday 20 August we're making some changes to what our rubbish and recycling contractors (Smart Environmental) can collect for health and safety reasons.

The main change is that glass recycling crates (green bins) will not be collected if they are too heavy or are overflowing. The contractors will place a sticker on the bin to indicate why it hasn't been emptied. Customers will then need to dispose of some or all of that recycling (for free) at one of the local transfer stations before Smart Environmental will empty it again.

Similarly, rubbish bags that are too heavy will also not be collected, and will be stickered to explain why. The maximum weight for rubbish bags is 15kg - this will be printed on future rubbish bags to ensure people are aware of safe weights.

We understand that these changes may be frustrating, but please remember that these bags and bins are lifted by people, not machines and the health and safety of our staff and contractors is one of Council's top priorities.
