Take an armchair adventure these school holidays
Children who live in the Matamata-Piako will soon have the opportunity to begin an exciting armchair adventure over the summer holiday.
The Matamata-Piako District Libraries, in partnership with Morrinsville and Matamata Kiwanis, are preparing to launch their Summer Reading Proramme, the Kiwanis' Great Adventure, aimed to encourage children to keep reading and use the library during the long summer holiday.
The Libraries Aoteraroa website www.librariesaotearoa.org.nz states research shows children can be affected by what is known as the summer slide, when literacy levels drop over the summer holidays. Halting the slide can be as simple as encouraging children to read five books over the summer break.
The Kiwanis’ Great Adventure is a workbook full of fun tasks and challenges for children aged 5-13-year-of-age. Each task has three levels of difficulty, so children can take on each task comfortably or really challenge themselves. It also includes a board game, featuring storybook heroes and villains that most children will recognise.
Throughout the programme, children must ‘check in’ with their local librarian upon the completion of tasks and they can also seek help from staff on any areas they find difficult.
Pre enrolments for Kiwanis' Great Adventure begin on 1 December and the programme runs through to 21 January. Prizes are up for grabs for children who complete a minimum of four of the 13 tasks and check in three times and will also be invited to attend the finale party, Circus in a Flash.
You can sign up for pre enrolment online or speak directly with one of the librarians in any of the Matamata-Piako Libraries.
