About the District Print E-mail

Matamata-Piako District is one of eight full, and four part districts that make up the Waikato region. Our district is approximately 175,000 hectares. It is bounded by the Kaimai Ranges to the east and is well known for its dairy farming heritage and thoroughbred racing industry.

Our district encompasses many diverse environments ranging from the Kaimai State Forest Park in the east, to the town of Matamata (a.k.a. Hobbiton) where the hobbiton segment of the world famous Lord of the Rings movie was filmed. Other major attractions in our district include historical landmarks such as Firth Tower, the Mokena Geyser, leisure pools and mineral spas and numerous walks on Mount Te Aroha, 3,126 feet high.
