Policies on the remission and postponement of rates on Māori freehold land

The recent changes to the Local Government Rating of Whenua Māori Amendment Act 2021 means we were proposing some changes to our Policies on the Remission and Postponement of Rates (Policies).

These are minor changes that only apply to Māori Freehold Land, including provision for remission of rates for a rating area and remission of rates on Māori Freehold Land under development.

The Local Government Rating of Whenua Māori Amendment Act 2021 requires us to review our existing Policies on the remission and postponement of rates on Māori freehold land (Sections 5 and 6 of the Policies) by 1 July 2022. The purpose of the review is to ensure the policies support the Preamble of Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993. Unfortunately, due to the late timing of the policy review, we will not be able to meet that timeframe, but we expect to be substantially through the consultation process by that time.

You can have your say from Thursday 9 June  to Thursday 7 July 2022, with consideration of submissions and decision to be made at the Council Meeting of 13 July 2022. Once adopted, the policies will come into effect retrospectively from 1 July 2022.

Consultation on the Policies is now closed.

Council adopted the revised Policies on the Remission and Postponement of Rates at its meeting 13 July 2022. The Final Policies is available here
