Thank you for your haiku and voting for your favourites!
Thank you to those who entered the haiku competition earlier this year, we received over 200 entries from poets of all ages.
Congratulations to the winners of People's Choice for each category; Kiera Roberts (child up to Year 8), Jake Dawson (child Year 9-13), Catherine Milson (18-39 years), Benjamin Ross (40-59 years) and Carolyn Osborne (60 years plus). All have been contacted and awarded their prize.
We are now pleased to announce the Judge’s Choice winners whose haiku will appear on the laneway wall connecting Arawa Street and Hetana Street in Matamata.
Congratulations to Carolyn Osborne (60 plus), Suzie Wilcox (60 plus), Jake Dawson (Year 9 to 13), Hamish Alexander (Child up to Year 8), Charlie Goile (child up to Year 8) and Suzie Wilcox (60 plus). Haiku from these winners, and a te reo Māori translation, will be published on the laneway wall.
We start preparing the wall for paint, week commencing Monday 18 November, and expect the haiku to be completed late November/early December.
Matamata's laneway mural project: celebrating community stories
The haiku poetry competition is a highlight of the Arawa to Hetana Street Laneway community mural project, designed to bring Matamata's unique stories to the CBD. Our Pride of Place team, working with local business owner Sonya whose store lines the laneway, received over 200 haiku poems about Matamata. These five-seven-five syllable poems competed for a spot on the laneway wall, with six winning haiku to be painted in both English and te reo Māori, using white on a black background.
Funded by Transport Choices, this initiative aims to draw locals and visitors to use the laneway and promote Matamata’s walkability. The project not only celebrates local creativity but also enhances the area's charm and accessibility.
Looking ahead, there are further opportunities to improve the laneway, making it an even more welcoming and attractive space. If you're passionate about this area, the Pride of Place team welcomes your proposals for collaboration to continue transforming this CBD laneway.
