Sunday trading open this Easter
Retailers are reminded that Matamata-Piako District Council has approved Easter Sunday trading from this Easter onwards.
There are some legal requirements including giving four weeks’ written notice if they want staff to work on Easter Sunday.
This will be the first year Matamata-Piako shops will be able to trade on Easter Sunday. Matamata-Piako District Council adopted this policy last May in order to help promote economic development and give people choice. The policy can be found at http://www.mpdc.govt.nz/pdf/PoliciesandBylaws/Easter%20Trading%20Policy%20-%20Final.PDF
Generally, shops must close on Good Friday. Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays, and staff who work on public holidays have extra entitlements.
For further information, go to www.employment.govt.nz/leave-and-holidays/public-holidays/restricted-shop-trading-days.
Council would also like to remind restaurants and bars (excluding clubs) that restrictions on the sale of alcohol apply on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. This means that no-one may be sold or supplied alcohol on any licensed premises on these days unless they are on the premises to dine or hold a special licence.
