With the long weekend coming up, we know many of you will be keen to get back out on our beautiful tracks.
Before you head out, here’s an update on what to expect and a few tips to help keep you safe.
What to watch out for
Flat tracks – There are lots of sticks and twigs on the ground. Standing on one stick can lift another and create a trip hazard.
Steep tracks – Heavy rainfall may have undercut banks and created slip‑prone sections.
Stream and river crossings – Waterways can remain dangerous for several days after a storm. Flows may be faster than usual and rocks can be very slippery.
Other hazards – Post‑storm conditions often include unstable ground, small landslips, damaged steps or bridges, and mud.
Tips to stay safe
- Let someone know where you're going: message a friend.
- Be prepared to turn back: If a track is muddy, slippery, or shows signs of damage, please don’t continue.
- Avoid high‑risk areas: Keep clear of steep slopes, heavy tree fall, and river crossings.
- Check if it looks safe: If in doubt, do not walk on the track.
Track update
It may take a few weeks to clear storm damage. So far, the following tracks have been cleared:
- Tui Track (Domain to Hamilton Street), cleared, but there are still a few high branches you’ll need to duck under.
- Waterfall Loop Track and Noel’s Lookout, both have been cleared.
- Horseman’s Track is open, but slippery and already a challenging track in dry conditions.
- Other tracks will be assessed and cleared over the coming weeks.
