Hawes Bush

Hawes Bush is 2.2142 hectares in area. It is located in the north eastern part of Waharoa on the corner of Walker Street and Mills Street, about five kilometres north of Matamata.

The reserve is undulating and features a large stand of mature Kahikatea (Dacrycarpus dacrydoides) that includes a walking track that meanders its way through the bush.

The stand of Kahikatea is identified as significant by the District Plan.

History

Hawes Bush was purchased by the former Matamata County Council to preserve existing stands of native bush that once existed across the Matamata plains. Matamata Conservation Corps built the fence adjacent to Walker and Mills Streets and subsidised labour schemes were involved in early maintenance of the reserve.
