Hey Te Aroha! We kicked off an exciting new project in February to get your town centre buzzing.

Pride of Place is about your town centre - creating a vibrant, social place where people feel a sense of belonging.

It's about placemaking - where we turn ordinary spaces into great places. Places that act as a magnet for people to stay longer and keep coming back.

We want to find out what YOU think will make your town centre buzz and we’re about to hit the streets - and connect online - to listen to what’s important to you. After all, you’re the experts on the future of your town centre!

There’s already some great stuff happening and we really want to hear what new ideas you have that could make the town centre more vibrant.

Let’s kōrero! Let’s catch up soon!

What is Pride of Place?

The Pride of Place project is about teaming up with our communities to get new ideas off the ground that will create a more vibrant town centre. The first step is to find out what you think is needed to bring about that change. We will gather your ideas before a diverse group of locals, who are really excited about the town's future, look at them in detail. That'll help us understand the sort of placemaking that you're keen to deliver and that we should be supporting.

We'll learn by doing - we’ll support our community do-ers to help bring those ideas to life. We'll try out new ideas to see what's possible and encourage people to think differently about how our town centre spaces can be used.

We want to test ideas using short term experiments to learn what works - and what doesn't. This will help give direction to any longer term change and investment in the town centre. Trying things out will ensure our collective effort and resource go into work the community really wants. It'll help us find the winning formula for Te Aroha!

Of course community spaces need good roads, parking and rubbish bins. But they also need to be safe. And interesting. And welcoming. Because really great community places are where people gather and connect.
