Every eligible household will have:
- a blue crate for glass, collected fortnightly
- a green bin for food scraps, collected weekly
- a red wheelie bin for rubbish, collected fortnightly
- a yellow wheelie bin for recycling, collected fortnightly
The kerbside collection days for our district are:
- Matamata (incl. Waharoa and Walton): Tuesday
- Morrinsville (incl. Tahuna): Wednesday
- Te Aroha (incl. Waitoa and Waihou): Thursday
Have your bins/crate on the kerb by 7.30am on collection days and leave a large gap between them so there's enough room for the truck's mechanical arm to operate. Place them at least 30cm apart - ideally 60cm or more - and away from other objects like lamp posts, letterboxes, trees and parked cars.
The new kerbside collection days will be:
- Matamata (incl. Waharoa and Walton): Tuesday
- Morrinsville (incl. Tahuna): Wednesday
- Te Aroha (incl. Waitoa and Waihou): Thursday

FAQs - new bin delivery
We know many people live on hills or have long drive ways or both. If you need to tow your wheelie bin to the kerbside by car, you can purchase special wheelie bin tow bar attachments. You can call Sulo Group on 09 273 5988 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
FAQs - new kerbside services
Please continue to take your bins to the collection point on a council road as the contractor is only contracted to collect from council roads.
FAQs - cost
Under the old system, rubbish and recycling is paid for through targeted rates ($123.91 per property that receives the service) and user fees (rubbish bags). The total amount a household pays varies depending on how many rubbish bags they use, e.g.:
Number of bags | Amount paid in rates | Household cost for waste disposal |
One bag ber fortnight (26 bags x $3) $78 |
$123.91 | $201.91 |
One bag per week (52 bags x $3) $156 |
$123.91 | $279.91 |
Two bags per week (104 bags x $3) $312 |
$123.91 | $435.91 |
Under the new and current system, rubbish and recycling will be fully paid through rates (i.e. you won't need to buy rubbish bags any more).
Every household that receives the kerbside collection service will pay $289.28 per year for this in their rates - this is only $9.37 more per year for household that currently put out one bag per week.

Hazardous Waste and Oil
Domestic quantities (up to 10 litres) of hazardous waste and oil can be disposed of at our transfer stations for a nominal fee.
Mitre 10 in Matamata or Morrinsville accept any type of household lightbulb for recycling.
Please do not put these items in your recycling bin or refuse bins as they can cause fires within the collection trucks as the materials are compacted. If you are unable to store these items prior to taking them to the correct recycler we would prefer they are taken directly to our refuse transfer stations.
Paint
Matamata Resene ColorShop will accept old paint and paint containers between 7.30am-5pm (Mon-Fri) and 9am-12pm (Sat).
Selected Resene ColorShops have been designated as Resene PaintWise Collection Centres. Drop off your unwanted paint and paint containers to any of these designated Resene ColorShops at any time during their opening hours.
E-waste/batteries
We now have battery and e-waste collection points at all of our transfer stations. See more details here.
These are safe facilities to recycle any of the following items: batteries, power tools, TVs, computers, cell phones, electronics and small appliances. Please put a piece of clear tape over the +/- ends of the battery and drop in to one of the special collection stations.
These items cannot go in your recycling bin or rubbish bags/bins, because when lithium batteries are put under pressure they can catch fire.
Car batteries can also be disposed of at our transfer stations for a nominal fee.
Soft Plastics
Woolworths in Matamata, Morrinsville and Te Aroha have soft plastics bins that you can use between 7am - 9pm daily. You can see other locations on the Soft Plastic Recycling website here.
Woolworths supports the Packaging Forum's Soft Plastics Recycling Scheme, where soft plastics are collected, recycled, and turned into new plastic products. Future Post turns the soft plastic into fence posts, and Saveboard processes soft plastics into a range of building materials.
Other
Some Mitre 10 stores accept polystyrene and pot plant containers for recycling.
The Matamata, Te Aroha, and Tahuna or Waharoa Little free library will accept some second-hand books and have suggestions for any they can't take.
Nespresso recycle their coffee capsules and give them a second life.
Tetra Pak (liquid paperboard cartons) can currently be recycled just outside our district in Paeroa, Hamilton and Tokoroa.
