Digital Strategy

Please note that this information was provided for the 2022 Local Government Elections and may now be out of date.

In 2018 Council adopted a Digital Strategy that aims to provide our community and staff with the best digital services in local government.

Our vision is

  • We are leaders - We want to be seen as a leader in the digital space – not just within local government, but within our community and the public sector.
  • We are open - We want to facilitate digital sharing by opening access to our data
  • We are digital only by 2025 - We aim to be digital only or digital first by 2025, saving time, money and reducing our waste

What we currently do

Over recent years we have created and grown a Digital Team whose role is the delivery of Council’s Digital Strategy.

The Digital Strategy provides the guiding principles and focus areas for this team, as well as a roadmap for the delivery of digital services. This roadmap is reviewed and reprioritised by staff annually to reflect business needs and rapidly changing technology.

What's on the horizon?

Demand and capacity – The initial roadmap for the Digital Strategy identified an eight year work programme to deliver on our vision. Changing priorities (such as speeding up delivery of some projects due to Covid-19 or introducing additional projects) mean that the ‘Digital only/first by 2025’ is unlikely to be met without major investment.

Pace of change – the rapid pace of technological change makes it difficult to plan and budget too far in advance/means plans constantly require review.

Digital equity – it is important that people remain at the heart of everything we do. Shifting to more online/digital services has potential to isolate or exclude people with limited knowledge or access to technology. It is important that we continue to provide accessible services for all. This has a flow on effect for other areas of Council e.g. supports the digital literacy programmes operating in our libraries.

Questions to consider

  • How much should Council be investing in digital transformation – more, less, or have we got it about right?
  • How do you see digital technology changing the landscape of local government?
