What you've already told us
In the last couple of years we’ve asked for feedback on several projects in Matamata, like the Hetana Reserve Master Plan, our Long Term Plan and more.
We appreciate the people who take the time to give us feedback, and we want you to know, all of that feedback is also being used as part of this project.
Below are some examples of things the community has already told us throughout these past consultations (note that this is just a sample/not all the submissions):
Upgrade and include planning and implementation of EV charging stations

The current footpath on Hetana Street is a bit pedestrian (pun) and not a very good one at that for tourist to use, give them something different
Originally submitted for 2021-2031 Long Term Plan
Put in a pathway from the Railside to the I-Site via the tree reserve. From this add various points of interest - seating, plenty of lighting to discourage loitering by undesirables at night.
Originally submitted for 2021-2031 Long Term Plan
Please give town pedestrian and cycle ways very serious consideration. We all need more exercise and a recent National report stated our children need more
Originally submitted for 2021-2031 Long Term Plan
It is good for (existing and new) businesses to see the towns being well kept, so it is important to keep this up
Originally submitted for 2021-2031 Long Term Plan
Make pedestrian areas, where no cars can enter at least during set days/hours to create a relaxed & safe shopping experience
Originally submitted for 2021-2031 Long Term Plan
Somewhere for youth to hangout
Originally submitted for 2021-2031 Long Term Plan
We want to work with our council to see our local towns continue to grow and become vibrant, attractive environs where local businesses want to establish themselves
Originally submitted for 2021-2031 Long Term Plan
Lighting would be one of the first suggestions, our town looks very dark and uninviting in the evenings.? There are a surprising number of people out walking in the evenings and if we want to attract visitors we need to look a bit more welcoming
Originally submitted for 2021-2031 Long Term Plan
I encourage that one of the councils high priorities is developing restoration plans for nature spaces
Originally submitted for 2021-2031 Long Term Plan
More bike racks
Originally submitted for 2021-2031 Long Term Plan
Continue to focus on PEOPLE? in the town centres as opposed to motor vehicles.
Originally submitted for 2021-2031 Long Term Plan
Making our town centres safer for pedestrians and cyclists is vital, particularly with tourism growth generated by the cycle trail
Originally submitted for 2021-2031 Long Term Plan
Make Matamata a destination town
Originally submitted for 2021-2031 Long Term Plan
Linking up the drives so that people can safely walk and cycle around Matamata would enhance the value of these valuable green spaces.
Originally submitted for 2021-2031 Long Term Plan
Considering the cycle trails that now come into our towns and thus the increased cycle traffic, there needs to be a good flow from the paths to the CBD. Bike racks are needed and space for foot traffic.
Originally submitted for 2021-2031 Long Term Plan
Anything that makes our town centres more pedestrian, cycle (trail, road and ebikes) and scooter friendly would be moving us in the right direction.
Originally submitted for 2021-2031 Long Term Plan
The drawcard for many visitors and people new to the area is the abundance of trees both native and exotics
Originally submitted for 2021-2031 Long Term Plan
Improve town centres by prioritising pedestrians and cyclists ? including plenty of places to lock bicycles
Originally submitted for 2021-2031 Long Term Plan
There are lots of self employed people working from home, If there was a dedicated shop or space in each town where these people could profile their business for a few days or a week at a time it would be such a support in terms of exposure /marketing . It could also be a spring board to a permanent shop as in testing the waters/ market research. Its helping little businesses grow. There are so many categories here : Artists, Artisans, Accountants, Beauty therapists, Health and well being , caterers...

As with other similar tourist towns ie Taupo Tauranga Rotorua my idea would be it invest in a mini golf complex 18 holes. Laid out in a relatively small area This could be indoors or outdoors depending on availability and location to the town centre ideally close to the new and sometimes busy cycle way rail side is very central and has the benefit of toilets

More inviting playgrounds & walking tracks in the urban areas
Originally submitted for Your Voice Your Vision 2020
The area behind the information center should be cleared of trees, and the sculpture area removed. A family friendly playground and picnic area should be created.

Block of hetana st from the public toilets to broadway. Widen the parking in this area and maybe create some more parks in the tree plantation. Have a walkway to the railside by the green from this area.

once a year have a Hobbiton weekend with markets fun activities and street music during the day and a Hobbit Ball on Saturday night and on Sunday have a Hobbit picnic.

The land within the Boundrys of the Councils concern, is given mainly to dairying, so our towns and settlements could reflect" The Theme" of bright clean dairy like freshness. Add to that Parks, Cycle trails and walking tracks etc. Each participating community could have welcome signage illustrating bright, clean and green aspirations including a caption such as .."Matamata Piako District, its the land we Journey in. Its our Waka". A permanent paid position for on overseer of streets and public areas, to take care of and pay attention to, cleaning the carparks, laybys, gutters and footpaths is a must when attracting visitors.

Place facilities activities in central locations I.e. extend the children’s playground at the domain to have more exciting activities as it is central to all and visible to visitors. Consider an alternative to the basketball hoop placed at the college, maybe place at the green so it is central and visible along with a pétanque court, space that is currently taken up by some very grubby statues, get the owners to remove these or clean them up and place throughout the town leaving this space for something else

Matamata is privileged to have large exotic trees in the urban area. The trees were planted with vision and foresight which we are now recognised nationally for. Felling of trees that shape the very ethos of our community is short sighted and when the tree is gone it is gone!

I recently visited Rotorua s Red Woods Tree walk, I have also visit Tree top walked in Australia. Different but the same. Developing of the area at Waiorongmai.Fund raising by buying of planking, like buy a brick. Using the Battery and the trees for a night light show, showing the history of the old gold mining Town and glowworm night walks

A simple plan to improve our town would involve creating a basic concrete pathway network, at least 3 metre wide for pedestrians, cyclists and mobility scooters to "share with care".
Originally submitted for Your Voice Your Vision 2020
Council could be forward thinking by installing future public lighting, with lights designed specifically to create minimal light pollution.
Originally submitted for Your Voice Your Vision 2020
Council should discourage the mowing of rural roadside verges. Allowed to grow, these "wild areas" create a rich diversity of wildlife for insects, bees and birds.
Originally submitted for Your Voice Your Vision 2020
Matamata the town with an abundance of Tui, Bellbird, Kereru, Fantail, Kingfisher etc.. Possible if a concerted effort was made both privately and publicly to plant native bird attractive trees and shrubs.

I have long thought that Matamata needed more than the Hobbit hole 'I'site to draw people to the town and then go on to Hobbiton. The idea of a full size sculpture of Smaug came to mind and seemed to be the obvious solution, located in an area where there is plenty of parking etc. Recently the idea resurfaced and I could picture a 'slide' incorporated into the 'sculpture', which would mean placing it adjacent to a playground maybe?
Originally submitted for Your Voice Your Vision 2020
I would love there to be a basketball area for kids and nice seating for parents to watch their kids
Originally submitted for Hetana St Masterplan
More notes on its heritage value, less out-of-place installations of 'sculpture' which have no context and seem to be plonked there without rhyme-or-reason. Perhaps fencing along the railway side to stop any shortcuts.
Originally submitted for Hetana St Masterplan
Seating to enjoy the shade. Push-bike parking area. Some exercise equipment which can incorporated into a circuit through there with link along rail line to Centennial Drive and then further on for running/walking exercise circuit.
Originally submitted for Hetana St Masterplan
Improved parking, maybe one row of trees removed to allow tourist off road parking. Gas BBQ installed, with coin slot to use, similar to what you see in the Austrailian parks
Originally submitted for Hetana St Masterplan
a lot more about local history
Originally submitted for Hetana St Masterplan
It's not very attractive , needs sprucing up
Originally submitted for Hetana St Masterplan
More space for kids
Originally submitted for Hetana St Masterplan
More disabled parking please. wide enough pathways for folk with walkers and prams to walk ....but deterrent for bikes f
or safety for those of is disabled please.
Originally submitted for Hetana St Masterplan
I would change its focus to the more sustainable modes of transport, by tailoring its services to pedestrians and cyclists, with the view to make Matamata as a whole more pedestrian/cycling-friendly. If I felt safe to do so, I would cycle to Hetana Street every single time but do not do so at present. Cycling safely around Matamata would be a dream.
Originally submitted for Hetana St Masterplan
historical panels regarding the railway and early Matamata life - include early Iwi settlements plus sculptures
Originally submitted for Hetana St Masterplan
A Matamata history board. Something interactive.
Originally submitted for Hetana St Masterplan
Install display boards showing history of town and district?
Originally submitted for Hetana St Masterplan
Have a playground. Supporting and encourage young family's to play outside
Originally submitted for Hetana St Masterplan
Make sure that there is a safe place for tourists to take photos of the Matamata iSite. Support local artists and sculptors by showcasing their work somewhere, somehow. Create an iconic landmark that resonates with locals in a way that isn't about hobbits.
Originally submitted for Hetana St Masterplan
Make area visitor friendly, safe easy walking around the i centre for photo taking...maybe one way only ...tighten the road up with more parking and paving/seating
Originally submitted for Hetana St Masterplan
Needs to be an iconic space, welcoming to town
