What you've already told us

In the last couple of years we’ve asked for feedback on several projects in Matamata, like the Hetana Reserve Master Plan, our Long Term Plan and more.

We appreciate the people who take the time to give us feedback, and we want you to know, all of that feedback is also being used as part of this project.

Below are some examples of things the community has already told us throughout these past consultations (note that this is just a sample/not all the submissions):

A vibrant place where people (locals) want to go and spend time enjoying with friends and family. A place we can be proud to have in Matamata. Visitors come to see and remember.

A place families meet up to have picnics, attend small concerts held in front of the green, eat ice cream from the ice cream truck, play at the playground while older siblings skate.

As Wiremu Tamihana was rated by HZ Herald as one of the top ten most influential New Zealanders ever. Given that most global " hero's" are famous for conquering and killing thousands of people [think Gengis Khan, Alexander the great etc] and Wiremu was famous for trying to stop wars and save lives and spent many years doing this. And given that he was from here, we could do a memorial with a statue and have lots of local history displayed that would be of interest to locals and visitors to Matamata.

Local art display

Make more use of the stage and maybe have additional picninc tables or large umbrellas on the green to further encourage people to entertain there

The? street looks unattractive

Originally submitted for Hetana St One Way Trial

check out the artwork down Hamiltons ward st (outside burger king).

I like the concept of restricting traffic in streets to make them more open spaces.

Fewer, slower cars. Recognition for cycling and safe provision for it.?

I like the idea of cultural art, but feel the planters and current 'trial' art looks tacky and is out of place for Matamata. - Sonya

More parking less decoration

In the interests of our need to honour the principles of te Tiriti, having Maori artwork recognised is a great start to changing the narrative of this town.

Originally submitted for Hetana St One Way Trial

The idea of making it a one way or even a complete pedestrian area is on track with world trends. If times square can do it, why cant we?

Originally submitted for Hetana St One Way Trial

I also love the traditional Maori art I think it is awesome and so special my son and I like looking at it every time we walk into town he is part Maori so this is very special to him and helps him embrace his culture

We need more parking not silly decorations

Originally submitted for Hetana St One Way Trial

I like the concept of making our streets safer for pedestrians and those with mobility challenges.

Originally submitted for Hetana St One Way Trial

would like to see them more permanent and continue to incorporate M?ori artwork and imagery.

Perhaps a mini golf hobbit themed could be put under the plantation trees or nearby.

Originally submitted for Hetana St One Way Trial

Street art isn't necessary, a natural look would be more appealing.

Originally submitted for Hetana St One Way Trial

No one needs planter boxes more than car parks .

Originally submitted for Hetana St One Way Trial

The town one needs a little bridge that connects to a smaller kids playground with little tunnels. Random stepping things for little ones to jump from one to the other. It doesn't have to cost lots of money to be exciting

Originally submitted for Hetana St One Way Trial

I have seen so many people standing in the road taking photos of the Hobbit ihouse, and seen some near misses

Originally submitted for Hetana St One Way Trial

Excited to see what other developments are proposed for this area to promote social and community inclusion and cohesion.

Originally submitted for Hetana St One Way Trial

Love the art, even just the idea to incorporate M?ori art is awesome! If I had it my way, all cars would be gone from the area to fully embrace a pedestrian friendly area

Originally submitted for Hetana St One Way Trial

I love, love the idea but it has to be at a certain standard. Like the street art that came after the earthquakes in Christchurch, such amazing work around the city now.

Originally submitted for Hetana St One Way Trial

I would like to see some nicer artwork as what is currently there isn?t very appealing at all (I understand this is temporary but it looks very cheap and unappealing)

Originally submitted for Hetana St One Way Trial

The wider footpaths, planting and seating has made walking along this pretty street actually feasible with young children. It has already encouraged us to walk into town instead of driving on multiple occasions.

Originally submitted for Hetana St One Way Trial

The area where the temporary artwork are could be made really nice with extra seating and/or gardens, or additional outdoor dining areas for the cafes.

Originally submitted for Hetana St One Way Trial

I was hoping that a hobbit theme garden/planting could have been at the information centre end. I love the cultural aspect but felt that could have been used to great effect at the other end.

Like that we're using art in our town planning. Don't like that it doesn't include a roller skating rink.

Originally submitted for Hetana St One Way Trial

Chairs, tables and seating arrangements should be made in the area to improve the civic space.

Originally submitted for Hetana St One Way Trial

Current art work may have special design meaning but is in complete contrast to the natural colours of the area, trees etc.

Originally submitted for Hetana St One Way Trial

The cycle lane is pathetic and a waste of time when the rest of our town is not cyclist friendly.

Originally submitted for Hetana St One Way Trial

Make a feature of the railway green space. A much more open and welcoming space.

Easy really; we need to give people a reason to want to come into town and spend money...How? What areas in any European town/city are the most popular? If you've travelled and observant, you'll know it's the old town. What's the attraction? Cobbled streets, no traffic, sprawling squares with people spilling out of cafes, alfresco dining and history oozing out of every nook and cranny. But we're a young country, we don't have hundreds of years of history? Er, not if you're Maori, we have hundreds of years of history we should be accentuating and learning about. Instead, I learnt about King Henry and his 6 wives! I remember when Matamata was one of the first towns to really do up their town through nice paving, cracking gardens and there was a real sense of pride. Other towns eventually followed suite. Our next big move as a community, given the challenges we currently face, will need to involve a massive pivot out of the old thinking and into the future, involve a massive investment, and be a place where talent wants to live. We can do that be reinventing our town and giving people a reason to come into town. Some ideas could be: -pedestrianise Arawa St; -markets once a month in Arawa St centred around around 20 pre made, 'market houses' sim to Christmas markets in Germany; -central destination playground; -redesign of Matamata centre (bypass esp for heavy traffic); -spaces/monuments dedicated to te ao Maori showcasing our bi cultural heritage; -community marae in the centre of town for people to use; The late, great New Zealander of the year Paul Callaghan once said we, in NZ, lack visionary leadership, both on the left and right side of the political spectrum. Can the same be said at a community level? Who's stepping up...

Create a destination playground. Some playgrounds that are especially engaging feature some or all of
the following: wide and tall slides, flying foxes, large hamster wheels, water-play, splash pads.
