Full description of idea:
Every successful township has a shopping mall. Take Christchurch for example; they have Riccarton mall, Bishopdale mall, Avonside mall, Eastgate mall, The Palms mall and Hornby mall, and some others that i could mention but i think you can see what i am getting at. They are very successfull and draw the shoppers in from all over Christchurch and neighbouring towns. The Westfield Corporation funded and built some of these malls. There is no doubt a Mall in Matamata would draw in shoppers from all over the Hauraki plains and surrounding areas. You only need to look at the Base in Hamilton where my wife and I are drawn to on a reagular basis. The convenience of being able to park underneath or around the Base area and enjoy indoor shopping regardless of the weather in a warm and comfortable environment is a huge attraction to most people. In the school holidays especially in the winter months, younger teens and their siblings and friends are flocking to the Base in huge numbers. The food court inside is phenomenally full of people all year round. Matamata is expanding at a rapid rate, and the population is growing fast. The township, if left as it is, will absolutely not be able to cope with this amount of expansion. Forethought is what is required here. The old fashion idea of saying but this is a small rural town and mainly a farmers community town and we need to keep it small and intimate simply does not wash with the local community anymore. If we need more infrastructure to cope with the inevitable growth of this town, then a large shopping mall with an indoors shopping environment should definitely be an intergral part of the expansion.Christchurch has already shown that the big malls do not impact on the smaller businesses in a negative way but actually enhance these smaller businesses in a positive way if they are built close to the smaller business areas. I am truly confident that Matamata is the most strategically placed town in eastern Waikato to accommodate a decent size mall that will bring people from all surrounding areas. Dont just think about what the community might need for now, because if we dont build a mall to cater for the huge expansion that is already happening then the town will not cope and the future will be bleak for our town. It could be a truly great town, but as im sure you know all the great towns provide malls for their people and some of the bigger cities have many malls. Malls are the way of the future. A town without a mall is not a very good town, just an average town.
How this idea will benefit the community:
It will be a town that everyone from Morrinsville, Te Aroha, Thames, Paeroa, Tirau, and many other places will want to come to,not to mention all the travellers en route to Tauranga. This will benefit all businesses in town and wil also lift property values. It will also provide an enjoyable asset to everyone who lives in the community.
