Build a stage in the Matamata Civic Centre

Submitted by Kevin

Full description of idea:

The Matamata Civic and Memorial Centre was supposed to be a REPLACEMENT of the Matamata Memorial Hall. A hall originally built with funds from the Government of the day, as well as funds raised by the local community to give a facility able to be used by the whole community for a wide range of local events. But when the plans came out, there was no stage and no consideration for storage of equipment for the users. The arts and community groups were asked for their input during the planning stage of this project, but their views were not taken into consideration in this build. So we got no stage and no storage areas. The only thing we managed to get was a wall on the side of the hall which can be removed for a stage to be built, which would not affect the structural integrity of the building. So this is definitely still possible. Let's see how many people in our community think the same. This is your chance to have a say.

How this idea will benefit the community:

A stage would give the abundance of travelling entertainers in NZ the opportunity to come to our community, giving us the chance to attend these performances without having to spend huge $$ on travel costs and overpriced city ticket prices. A look at the performers, entertainers and exhibitors who have shows in the Putaruru Plaza will show you just what we are missing out on. Currently booked for upcoming performanxces are Dave Dobbyn, When I Grow Up (a performance by the Aspire Dancers from Matamata), The Abba Show (a musical touring from Australia), The Yellow Brick Road (another performance by the Aspire Dancers from Matamata), and motivational speaker Tony Christiansen. How many of these are coming to Matamata??? NONE OF THEM.
