Operating a new food premises

Anyone starting a new business or undergoing a change in ownership of an existing business must register for either a Food Control Plan or a National Programme. 

Opening a new food premises

New businesses are typically required to register under the Food Act 2014, Public Act Contents - New Zealand Legislation) for a Food Control Plan or a National Programme. 

Determining your scope of operations

Visit the MPI website to identify whether you need to register under a Food Control Plan or National Programme 1, 2 or 3. Click on the "My Food Rules" link which will guide you through a series of questions to determine the appropriate registration type. 

Once determined, complete the application form and scope of services document to submit to the Matamata-Piako District Council.

Fees and Charges 2025/26

Before commencing, it is recommended to contact the following departments to discuss any requirements:

Planning team: Advises on the District Plan, parking requirements, advertising, and potential future developments in the area. 

Building team: Assists with construction requirements, change of use conditions, grease traps, plumbing and drainage, emergency exits, number of sanitary fixtures, and accessibility for disabled individuals. 

Note: A building consent is required for any construction work.

Environmental Health team: Provides guidance on health requirements, inspections, and food sale registration.
