Construction to begin on Swim Zone Matamata roof

Construction is about to get underway on the temporary roof at Swim Zone Matamata.

The roof over the indoor pool was removed in late 2021 after Council discovered that the roof structure over the pool didn't meet the minimum modern earthquake building standards and one of the laminated beams was showing signs of failure. A working group of community representatives and Councillors, led by Sport Waikato explored options for the facility.

Council worked alongside the working group, and decided to put a 'medium term solution' in place, meaning that the Matamata community can continue to access an indoor pool and swimming lessons all year round, while we take on the longer term challenge of planning for a new or upgraded complex that meets the future needs of the community.

Construction on the medium term roof will get underway next week, with the leisure pool (the old indoor pool) closing from midday on Friday 23 June. This pool and the spa will need to remain closed while the work takes place, aiming to reopen in early-mid October 2023.

The lane pool will remain open while the work takes place with the water temperature increased to 30 degrees. Swim school and squad will continue to operate as usual in the lane pool.
