FACING THE RUBBISH PROBLEM HEAD ON KERSDE COLLECTIONS
A rubbish and recycling colletion system recently adopted by Tauranga Council involving the use of 4 kerbside bins to commence operation early in July. This is made up of a 240L recycling bin, a 140L rubbish bin and a 23L food scrap bin in addition to their existing 45L green glass crate. This system is expected to halve the amount of waste each household sends to landfill within 7 years and if adopted by the MPDC, could solve the challenges the Council is facing on how to manage solid waste within the principles of Zero Waste. How to deal with food scraps would remain a problem, but the MPDC could investigate the feasibility of having a Composting System similar to one currently in use in Raglan and operating as a community enterprise. This would need to be centrally located within the boundary of the MPDC or ideally in close proximity to one of the proposed Recovery Centres.
