Matamata-Piako is home to roughly 5,500 registered dogs. While dog registration numbers have remained relatively the same over the past five years, the costs associated have increased significantly - particularly overheads and legal, salaries, vet and sustenance costs. Registration fees help us to provide a number of important services to the community. 

We've set the following animal control fees for the 2025/2026 registration year.

Please note that keeping an unregistered dog may result in an infringement fee of $300. Owners are legally responsible for keeping their dog under control at all times. Failure to do so is an offence under Section 53 of the Dog Control Act with a fine of up to $3000 or an ingringement fee of $200.

Any dog found at large can be impounded at th eowner's expense.
