Matamata’s eagerly anticipated Open Country Stadium has passed another major milestone. The stadium’s frame has been raised, and the roof has now been installed, marking a key phase toward completion. The main construction, which started in May, remains on track and within budget, a promising sign for both stakeholders and the local community.

Located on the grounds of Matamata College, the stadium is designed to serve both the school and the wider community, featuring a double‑court gymnasium, flexible indoor spaces, changing rooms, and storage facilities. The project aims to increase participation in physical activity and address community needs, including an aging population and growing demand for accessible indoor recreation.Stadium drone shot 2 Aug 2

Backed by a partnership between the Matamata Futures Trust, Sport Waikato, the Ministry of Education, Matamata-Piako District Council, grants, and local community donations, the project represents a strategic, community-focused investment in the region’s future.

“Staying on time and within budget is a testament to the planning and collaboration that has been going on behind the scenes for this project,” says Mayor Adrienne, “it’s more than just a building, it’s a long-term investment in community wellbeing, youth development, and local opportunities.”Open Country Stadium 21 July 2

The stadium will offer a custom-designed space for school sports, community fitness, events, and recreation opportunities. With the roof now in place, and the structural frame complete, interior works will begin in the coming months. The venue will open early next year, and you can see more about the project here
