We’re thrilled to share that the final design for the Matamata Domain Playground upgrade has been completed. Since design consultation back in 2023, Matamata Futures have been working with sponsors, running fundraising events and working with community groups to make up the additional $1 million that was needed to include all the things the community wanted to see in the upgrade. Thanks to this work, we are now ready to take the next steps together.

The playground includes some exciting features that came directly from community feedback – like a flying fox, accessible play equipment, and a fenced area for younger children. The design also separates areas for different age groups and play styles, ensuring there’s something for everyone.

The playground has been designed using Te Aranga Design Principles, which help reflect local identity and values. It includes a variety of play types to support developmental learning – such as formal play, informal play, nature play and social spaces.

The first signs of construction will be a temporary construction fence, followed by the removal of existing equipment – some of which will be repurposed if it’s still in good condition. There will also be tree pruning to future-proof the space. After that, contractors will begin preparing the site and bringing in the new equipment. Site work is expected to begin before Christmas.
