A haircut for some special locals

If you wandered through the Matamata Domain this week, you may have noticed some our beloved locals getting a trim - the oak trees.
Don’t worry, they aren’t going anywhere. In fact, they’re just getting a bit of careful maintenance to keep them safe, healthy, and standing strong for years to come.
These trees have been part of the Domain for over a century - planted in 1917, they were established as living memorials to locals who lost their lives during the First World War.

At their feet you can still find the original plaques honouring the first four Matamata soldiers lost at Gallipoli - Corp R.N. Wild, Trooper N. Maisey, Corp. J. Bradley, and Trooper Watson. Over time, these trees have literally embraced these memorials, with trunks folding around the chains and plaques. With nature and remembrance now literally intertwined, it’s a reminder of the lasting connection these memorials hold within our community.

These protected trees will remain an important part of the Domain's story. The work that's been happening is preparing them for the future - making sure they can keep standing tall for the next generation.
