From 15 May 2025, Thompson's Track will be closed to all vehicles. This is for the safety of users and to minimise environmental impact over the winter months. The track will reopen to vehicles in late October or early November this year depending on conditions. Throughout the closure, the track will remain available for those not using vehicles, like pedestrians.

11 June 2025 Horseman's Track - Due to a fallen tree, Horseman's Track is currently closed until it can be safely removed. Signage is in place, and we kindly ask that you avoid the area. We will update this message once the track has reopend.

13.4 Department of Conservation

Significant areas of the District lie within the Conservation Estate. The Council will liaise with the Department of Conservation in the utilisation of this resource to achieve the best possible outcome.

Methods of doing this may include, but are not necessarily limited to:

  • Reserves Management Plans;
  • Conservation Plans.

A Management Plan for the Kopuatai Peat Dome should be developed as it is considered that 20m is insufficient to protect the natural values of it. The plan is to be prepared in conjunction with the Regional Council, the Department of Conservation and shall recognise sustainable management practice of land around the Dome and the effects on it.
