Growth Projections

In order to plan for the long term, we regularly review the most up-to-date population data and projections to ensure our infrastructure and services can continue meeting the needs of our communities.
The New Zealand Census is released every five years and includes the most up-to-date data for our district. The latest 2023 Census provides important information on our community at a regional, district, urban/rural, town, and ward level. Census 2023 data can be found here: Aotearoa Data Explorer
Stats New Zealand also produce place summaries for regions, districts, and towns based on the most recent Census data. You can find the Matamata-Piako District summary here: MPDC place summary Stats NZ

Matamata-Piako became a member of Future Proof in 2021, a sub-regional group made up of Councils, iwi, and central government. The Waikato Councils involved in Future Proof work together to not only plan for now, but for the future. To achieve this, the Future Proof Councils use population projections that are completed by WISE and Te Ngira at Waikato University.
WISE and Te Ngira develop population projections for our district and towns over a fifty-year period. These projections help Matamata-Piako and our neighbouring Councils to better understand how our population is likely to change over time and our communities grow, and plan for the future.

You can find the data we use from Te Ngira below, and the full datasets here

Following the 2018 Census Data release, NIDEA published two reports:
2018-base Population, Family and Household, and Labour Force Projections for the Waikato Region, 2018-2068
